These eight cases were commenced to recover damages in the total amount of $578,608.98 sustained on the night of January 4, 1958, when fires and explosions occurred as a result of gas leaking from the mains of the defendant, Madison Gas and Electric Company, in the 200 block of North Bassett street, Madison, Wisconsin. The defendant, Madison Gas and Electric Company, interpleaded and cross-complained against the defendant, Ford, Bacon & Davis, Incorporated, and the defendant, Rockwell Manufacturing Company. The interpleaded defendants separately put in answers and moved for summary judgment dismissing the cross complaints. The motions were supported and opposed by various affidavits, counter, supplemental and reply affidavits, adverse examinations and exhibits, the record exceeding some 2,500 pages. The trial court denied the motions and the interpleaded defendants appealed.
